Your Fall Wellness Arsenal: 5 Herbs to Start

Fall is here! While colorful leaves, pumpkin spice, and cozy sweaters may be the first thing that comes to mind this time of year, elevating your wellness routine should be a close second. Common fall ailments include cold and flu, dehydration, asthmatic inflammation, and seasonal depression. Herbs can be helpful and powerful preventative and treatment for such conditions. Here are a few herbs and herbal combinations to keep in your autumn wellness arsenal:

Elderberry

Fall is notorious as the start of the cold-and-flu season. Elderberry is a particularly potent berry that is known for its ability to support those suffering from cold and flu symptoms. One study concluded that participants that used elderberry saw a significant reduction in the duration of their symptoms. Elderberry is also being tested in coronavirus patients, showing progress in early stages of support.

Elderberry can be used in tea form, as a liquid syrup, eaten naturally, or taken as a capsule. Our Zinc (Elderberry Umckaloabo) liquid or our Elderberry Plus Powder is a good place to start.

Garlic and Ginger

Just add onion and you have a ‘Wholly Trinity’ of immunity goodness! Garlic and ginger together boost the immune system, support health digestion, decrease inflammation, reduce mucus build-up and is warming to the body -- a must as cooler weather comes in. Both have been used across cultures in dishes to support the body’s healing during a cold.

Our Ginger Root Powder can be used to add flavor and healing properties to your meal. Just add garlic and you’re good to go! Or, drink it as a tea. Just add a ½ to 1 tsp in a cup with 1 clove of garlic, crushed. Pour in hot water and let it steep covered for 10 minutes.

Vitamin D3

No fall wellness kit is complete without Vitamin D3. Numerous studies have been done on the benefits of Vitamin D3 for multiple immunodeficient symptoms, such as reduced healing time, respiratory infections, and seasonal mood challenges. If you’re low in vitamin D, and most people are, good quality supplementation such as our Vitamin D 3 liquid can support your efforts in improving your levels. It is advised to get your levels checked yearly before and after supplementation to gauge your response and to make sure you’re receiving the desired benefit.

Astragalus

Also known as Huang Qi, Astragulus is what we consider to be a ‘master herb’. From traditional Chinese medicine to naturopathy, astragalus is well known and commonly used to strengthen the lungs and the body. In the fall, the lungs can become dry -- just like the surrounding weather. Astragulus acts as a tonic, immune booster, and blood tonifier, supporting the body’s natural defenses. It is a MUST for fall immunity! To learn more about astragalus, check out our organic Astragalus Root Powder here

Camu Camu

This herb may be lesser known, but it is certainly not least! Camu camu is a small bushy tree native to the Amazon rainforest. It bears a fruit by the same name that is rich in vitamin C. One teaspoon of this fruit provides you with over 761% of the RDA for vitamin C, making it more potent than more commonly used citrus, such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits!

Vitamin C is crucial in many reasons, such as the absorption of iron, regeneration of cells (connected to healing time), increasing immune functions and more. While this nutrient is more commonly consumed as an artificial powder or in sugary processed juices, camu camu is nutrient rich through and through! Our Camu Camu powder can easily be added to a smoothie, added to fresh pressed green juices, or in water.

With the coronavirus still underway, and fall coming in, stock your arsenal with the immune-supporting herbs and supplements you need to give yourself and your loved ones the healthiest season yet!
